First-ever Dartmouth Undergraduate Venture Capital Investment Competition Team Wins at Regional Tournament at Boston University
A Dartmouth undergraduate team, sponsored by the Magnuson Center for Entrepreneurship and in partnership with the Tuck Center for Private Equity and Venture Capital, won the 2020 New England Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) at Boston University.
The Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC; https://www.vcic.org/) is an annual competition held around the world at which students can become a Venture Capitalist for a day to make investment decisions on real startups, execute due diligence, and negotiate deals with real entrepreneurs.
The team was made up of Chuyang Guan ’20, Dev K. Kapadia ’23, Leo Lei ’21, Steven A. Adelberg ’21, William G. Hsieh ’20, Liam R. Prevelige ’23 and Jin Hyun Cheong GR. They worked extremely hard over the last three months learning how to screen deals, do due diligence, and model startup financials with great lectures and workshops led by faculty advisor Jim Feuille.
42 Dartmouth undergraduate students applied for 18 places in the Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) Training Program offered by the Magnuson Center and organized by Jin Cheong GR, Magnuson Center Student Leader and Sarah Morgan, Program Manager for Experiential Learning at the Magnuson Center. Students applied for exclusive access to lectures, workshops, and case studies on real startups and investment deals. This intensive program was designed to provide a deep dive into all aspects of venture capital. Successful participants had the chance to represent Dartmouth at the Venture Capital Investment Competition @Boston, MA on Feb 1, 2020. In the last three weeks of fall term students participated in training and workshops and were given an assignment over winter break. Subsequently, the Dartmouth Undergraduate Student VCIC Team of five students and 1 alternate were chosen. These students trained with Jim Feuille ’79, Executive Director of Private Equity and Venture Capital at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and also Venture Partner at Crosslink Capital. Tuck 2nd year students helped train students and listened to their presentations.
